8 reasons to become a location-independent entrepreneur

Updated: Jan 8, 2023

There’s no better time to become a location-independent entrepreneur than right now. There are really a million reasons to be able to work from anywhere in the world, but I'll give you our top eight:

You get to work when you want.

When you're not tied to an office (or someone else's dream), you get to choose when and where you work. That agency is so important! It's so freeing. Not to mention the wonders that a deep sense of freedom can have on your mental well-being.

There's loads of flexibility in the ways that you decide what a work schedule looks like, as well. If you want to take a full month off in-between two or three months of your workloads, you can do just that!

You can travel more than you ever thought possible

According to the World Nomads, “The average cost of travelling is $20,000 per year if your budget is $50 a day, or $10,000 if it's $25 a day.”

But that doesn't mean you have to spend all of your time on vacation if you're living abroad. It can be hard work at times—as with any job—but the upside is that (unlike most jobs) there are no set hours and no deadlines; instead, there are just goals and projects that need to be completed in order to move forward. Because of this flexibility, it's easier for location-independent entrepreneurs to take advantage of cheap intracontinental flights and Airbnb/extended stay deals around the world without feeling like one is throwing precious resources away.

You don’t need a big bankroll.

If you’re new to entrepreneurship and want to dip your toes into the water without big financial risk, becoming location-independent is an excellent way to get started. The beauty of location independence is that you can start small, grow your business at a pace that works for you and then expand as money comes in. You don’t need an office or any fancy equipment: working from home or even a coffee shop will do just fine.

You could also use this opportunity to travel while gaining valuable experience in an industry with which you are not yet familiar. Your laptop, tablet or smartphone are all portable tools at your disposal—you won’t need anything else! There are also plenty of free tools available online like Google Docs and Google Drive (which allow users to collaborate and share documents remotely), Trello (for task management), etc.. As such, there really isn't much cost involved in setting up shop as a location-independent entrepreneur - financially or mentally!

You meet like-minded people.

If you're a location-independent entrepreneur, you get to meet people from all over the world. These could either be people who are interested in what you're doing and want to help you out or other entrepreneurs who are working on similar projects as yours whom you can bounce ideas off of or partner up with. This makes it much easier to get things done since there's no proximity barrier between you and your collaborators!

You can live more practically.

If you are going to be working from home, it's important that your home be a place where you will actually want to work. If you don't like the weather in your area and/or are not comfortable with it, then moving somewhere else may be necessary. For some people, living with family is perfect while they get started with their business, but once they feel confident enough with their income stream and choose to live on their own, they should consider where they want to live based on things such as cost of living and overall satisfaction.

You get more experience in your field.

Being a location-independent entrepreneur allows you to spend the majority of your time learning and working in the field of your choice. You get to work on projects that actually interest you, which means you will be more motivated and engaged than if you had a job where you were forced to do something outside of your zone of genius.

You learn new skills through osmosis.

Learning new skills is not only about going to school or taking classes. You can learn new skills through osmosis, by being around other people and cultures that have them. And you will be able to apply what you learn in your day-to-day life by practicing these skills until they become second nature.

You find a better work/life balance.

With location-independent entrepreneurship, you can have a better work/life balance. When you’re not commuting to an office or working long hours at home, you have more time to spend with loved ones and doing the things that provide you pleasure. Not only that, being able to choose the place where you want to work gives you the flexibility of working in a café one day and then at home for the next few days. Or from the coast of beach one weekend and in a beautiful Airbnb treehouse the next.

Take advantage of this freedom by using your favorite local coffee shop as an office for a few hours!

Conclusion

Life isn’t meant to be spent in just one place, doing the same thing over and over again. It’s meant to be lived and experienced—and that means travelling the world and making friends in new places every day. There are countless reasons why you should make this decision for yourself: because it will improve your work/life balance, because it will allow you to travel more than ever before, or simply because it sounds like fun! The important thing is that once you make up your mind about going out on your own as an entrepreneur or freelancer, everything else becomes easier from there on out.
