What is a location-independent business?

Updated: Jan 8, 2023

WFA Immersion Week - Cape Town, South Africa

When you hear the words "location-independent business," you might think of a travel blog or someone who makes money while travelling the world. That's actually just one type of location-independent business. In this article, I'll explain what a location-independent business is and how it might be able to help you achieve financial freedom without giving up your freedom!

So what is a location-independent business?

A location-independent business is any kind of business that can be managed outside of a traditional office setting. This means the business can be run from anywhere in the world, from any device and at any time of day or night. It also means that you don't have to spend all your time in one place--you can choose to work from home, in coworking spaces and coffee shops or even take regular trips out of town to pursue adventures.

Perks of running a location-independent business

One of the main benefits of a location-independent business is that it gives you the flexibility to work at any time of day. You don’t have to worry about getting up early, or staying up late if it means working fewer hours in total. It also makes sense to work when your energy levels are highest and take breaks during times when they drop (such as after lunch).

You can also choose which days of the week you want to work on, regardless of what other people around you are doing. This is especially useful if there are certain days when you know that nothing will get done anyway because everyone else is resting their minds or bodies. You can take those days off without feeling bad about it!

This freedom makes it easier for you if you want more time with your loved ones as well - whether you spend this time relaxing or travelling around together!

Categories of location-independent businesses to earn money

There are a few different ways your business could be location-independent and still earn money:

  • Service Business. You might offer consulting, writing, accounting or any other service that you can perform remotely.

  • Product Business. If there's something someone needs and is willing to pay for, you could sell it if you can deliver the product via an online platform like Shopify or Amazon as an affiliate (and thus make money without ever touching the product).

  • Both. Some businesses combine both products and services into a cohesive offering that appeals to consumers looking for flexibility in their working lives.

Drawbacks to location-independent business

While location-independent business has many benefits, there are some drawbacks. The main drawback is that you need to be self-disciplined. You have to show consistent in committing to the tasks that will grow your business over time, or you won’t materialize your goals.

Another drawback for some people might be the fact that they have less control over their time. Because most location-independent businesses involve working online or remotely, there is a lot of flexibility in terms of when and where you complete tasks; however, this can also mean increased distractions from the outside world if your work environment isn't structured well enough (e.g., not having a designated space for “work only”).

However, these drawbacks are things that can easily be addressed by adding some structure and boundaries around the way you run your location-independent business.

Conclusion

A location-independent business could be the key to living life on your own terms. Being able to work whenever you want and from wherever you want gives you more freedom over your time, which in turn helps reduce stress. You can spend more time with loved ones or on activities that are important to you without feeling guilty about not being at work or missing deadlines.
